How to Teach
We work exclusively with local artists to provide a space to teach classes and workshops. We also partner with local artists to display their work year round as well as during shows and special events. We encourage artists interested in participating to read the information below before reaching out.
Instructor Eligibility:
Applicants must be qualified, talented artists based in Central Indiana and at least 18 years of age.
We seek local artists with teaching experience who demonstrate strong mastery of their subject matter and offer instruction that is engaging, effective, and professional.
Generation Art and Frame reserves the right to decline or discontinue working with an instructor at its discretion and is not obligated to provide an explanation for such decisions. Teaching agreements may be terminated by GA&F at any time for any reason.
Submission Guidelines:
Resumes, work samples, and a brief teaching synopsis may be emailed to generationartandframe@yahoo.com.
A full employment résumé is not required. Instead, please include a list of past teaching experience (courses taught and locations), 3–5 examples of your work, and a description of your proposed class or workshop. This description should outline the medium, whether materials are provided by the instructor or students, class length, cost per student, and any other relevant details.
A copy of the teacher agreement is available upon request. All instructors must complete a teacher agreement prior to beginning instruction.
Compensation:
To ensure instructors are compensated regardless of attendance (including registered students who do not attend), we guarantee a minimum payout equal to either five students or 50% of total registrations whichever amount is greater. For example, if a workshop costs $50 per student and only three students attend, the instructor will still be paid $125 (based on five students at a 50% split). If a class reaches its maximum of 12 students, the instructor would earn $300.
Generation Art and Frame reserves the right to cancel classes in advance due to weather, low enrollment, or other circumstances. Classes canceled in advance do not provide instructor compensation and may be rescheduled at Generation Art and Frame’s discretion.
Classes canceled due to instructor-related issues, including illness, lateness, or failure to appear, are not eligible for payment.
Instructors are typically paid by check on the same day the class is taught. In rare cases, payment may be issued within 2–3 days following the class.
Tax Information:
Instructors who earn more than $600 in a calendar year will receive a 1099 form. Instructors are independent contractors and are not employees of Generation Art and Frame. Instructors are solely responsible for the reporting and payment of all applicable taxes.
Classes vs Workshops:
Generation Art and Frame uses the term “Class” to refer to an ongoing learning experience focused on a continuing theme or medium.
The term “Workshop” refers to shorter, self-contained learning experiences, typically lasting one to two days, or limited courses running four to six weeks.
Ongoing classes traditionally have fewer enrollments than workshops, as they require a longer-term commitment from students.
What We Offer:
Traditional painting and drawing classes and workshops are our most commonly requested offerings.
We regularly receive requests for ongoing classes, one time workshops, and classes or workshops designed for children.
Although we are open to exploring other types of classes, interest tends to be lower outside our core offerings.
We have limited capacity to support specialized classes (such as those requiring kilns or glass materials). Instructors proposing these classes should plan to supply all necessary materials.
Pricing Classes and Workshops:
Instructors are responsible for setting their own class and workshop prices. We are happy to work with instructors to explain the revenue breakdown and help establish fair and appropriate pricing.
When calculating pricing, instructors should factor in the cost of any materials they plan to provide.
If students are expected to supply their own materials, instructors must provide a materials list in advance so it can be shared with students.
Classes are typically priced lower for students than workshops, but because they are ongoing experiences, they often generate greater overall revenue for instructors over time.
Additional Information:
All classes and workshops take place in the basement of Generation Art and Frame, which is accessible by stairs only. We make sure students are aware of this before they register.
Our recommended class size is a minimum of 5 students and a maximum of 12. We can accommodate up to 15 students if needed, though the space may feel crowded at that capacity.
